White Villages of Andalusia

- The road of the white villages of Andalusia -

If I had been asked about white villages a few years ago, my first thought would have been Santorini in Greece. The small island in the southern Aegean has become a true tourist magnet over the last few years and photos of the whitewashed houses are now found on almost every photowebsite and travel blog. It almost seems impossible to take a photo without disturbing tourists in it. No wonder that since I uploaded my photo from Frigiliana in Andalusia on Tumblr, the number of reblogs with the wrong subtitle "Greece" is now no longer countable.
The white villages of Andalusia were also unknown to me, and they are still an insider tip. Since there are quite a few of them, some in remote valleys, it is sometimes quite unlikely to meet other tourists in the same place.
A trip from Nerja and Frigiliana on the Andalusian coast near Málaga, through the mountain region of the Axarquía and along the road of the white villages to Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas and Olvera. In the middle of the kingdom of olives.

Baselworld - Watch and Jewelery Fair

Man(n) genießt.

- Baselworld fair for jewelery and watches -

Basel, Switzerland. End of March. It is 18:00 o'clock. I'm standing here with a drink in my hand at an improvised bar in a sea full of perfectly of dressed people on the covered forecourt of the Basel Fair. Besides, now and then I clearly believe myself being underdressed. In the background a music band has started to play Garota de Ipanema of Tom Jobim. The song interferes with the basses of House and Electro music from a pavilion next to where I stand. The atmosphere feels like a typically relaxed Saturday evening. I'm listening simultaneously to all the languages of this world.
I can see big people, small people, people with big cameras, people with small hands and big smartphones. All of them carry bags of well-known luxury manufacturers, who are full of brochures and expensive advertising gifts. The pros among them have small trolley cases and pull their trophies just behind them.
Baselworld is the "world fair for watches and jewelery" held every year in spring in Basel. It is considered to be the "most important meeting place for the watch and jewelery industry" and it's my travel tip to enjoy an even more international flair on the streets of Basel.
If you stand in front of the exhibition hall or do not shy away from the expensive entrance fees, then you can convince yourself of the very special unofficial dress code of this jewelery fair. If you don't wear a suit or jacket as a male you're considered a clear underdressed outsider. The ladies wear everything from business to luxury prè-à-porter which can be carried without any accidents in the suitcase on the flight to Basel. The second look usually goes towards wrist and hands. Here you can discover the finest creations of the international watch and jewelery industry.
With the right handbag or messenger bag, the perfect Baselworld outfit is complete for both men and women and for the observer everything is done to make people watching an entertaining amusement. So I'm standing here observing the crowd, music in my ears and a drink in my hand. The gentleman next to me buys a bottle of champagne from Pommery for 115 Swiss francs. One enjoys. A perfect saturday evening.

Lyon Stopover

I know Lyon only as a city on the edge of the motorway on the way to the South of France and I definitely think it's one of the most underrated cities in France. Some of my friends have studied there and their initial skepticism has given way to pure enthusiasm for the pulsating life of this French university town in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is hard to believe, but Lyon is the third-largest city in France with nearly 500,000 inhabitants. In the streets of the almost medieval, very well-preserved old town, the life of the locals pulsates in the late evening. Earlier this place can be very crowded because there are a lot of tourists in those narrow streets. City and water are always a charming combination for me and Lyon with the two rivers Rhone and Saône has more to offer than other cities in France. In the traditional restaurants (recognizable by the word "Bouchon" in their name), you can discover regional delicacies. For me it's definitely a recommendation for a short stopover or a longer stay and if you're looking for something else than your usual holidays at the mediterranean sea. I hope to be back soon for a longer visit.
